In a Historical judgment of the Supreme Court repealed the colonial Section 377 which criminalized consensual gay sex. The Supreme Court said Section 377 is irrational and arbitrary and it is high time it is scrapped. “LGBT Community has same rights as of any ordinary citizen. Respect for individual choice is the essence of liberty; the LGBT community possesses equal rights under the constitution. Criminalising gay sex is irrational and indefensible,” Chief Justice Dipak Misra, who headed the five-judge bench hearing the case, said.
As soon as the judgment was announced, Bollywood celebrities from Karan Johar, Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor to Ranveer Singh, Rajkummar Rao among others lauded the SC for its decision.

Speaking of Section 377, the 158-year-old colonial law considered “carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal a natural offence” and were to be punished by up to 10 years in jail under the 1861 law
