With the rising popularity of esports, filmmakers have tried to capitalise on this trend by releasing films about gaming competitions. Meet six of our favourite esports films and TV shows:

1. Gran Turismo (2023)

Gran Turismo is an American film about a Gran Turismo player who became a professional racecar driver. Released in 2023, it’s based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, a professional British racing driver.

In 2011, Jann participated in the GT Academy, an international racing competition hosted by Nissan. He became the third and youngest player to win the challenge, opening the path for a real-life racing career.

2. 1UP (2022)

1UP is an esports comedy about Vivian Lee (portrayed by Paris Berelc), an experienced gamer who, thanks to her skills, won a scholarship and secured a spot in her university’s male esports team – the Betas.

But tension quickly builds up and Vivian is told she’ll never become a starting player in her team. As such, Vee partners with coach Parker (portrayed by Ruby Rose) to form a professional team and defeat the Betas.

3. Players (2022)

Released in 2022, Players is a TV series that follows a fictional League of Legends team: Fugitive Gaming. Despite the team’s success, Fugitive Gaming’s founder, Creamcheese, hasn’t won a championship in years.

To attempt to lift the trophy once again, the team hires Organizm, a young streamer who quickly catches everyone’s attention, leaving Creamcheese jealous. To become champions, the two players must swallow their pride and work together.

4. Noobz (2012)

Noobz is a 2012 comedy film about a group of friends (Cody, Andy, Oliver, and Hollywood) traveling to Los Angeles to participate in an esports competition, the Cyberbowl Video Game Champions. However, the situation quickly turns bizarre, and the four friends must go against real-life enemies for a chance to lift the trophy.

5. Free to Play: The Movie (2014)

Free to Play: The Movie is a 2014 documentary released by the Valve Corporation. If you’re into gaming, you’ll recognise Valve as the legendary company behind games like Counter-Strike and Half-Life. 

The film follows the efforts of three DOTA 2 professional gamers – Clinton “Fear” Loomis, Danil “Dendi” Ishutin, and Benedict “hyhy” Lim.

6. The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (2007)

The King of Kong is a 2007 American documentary based on the real-life story of Billy Mitchell, a gamer who set the record for Donkey Kong. This accomplishment earned him the title of “Video Game Player of the Century”. 

However, in 2003, Mitchell’s record was beaten by Steve Wiebe, a man who had recently lost his job. This leads to a battle between both players to land a spot on the 2007 Guinness World Records book.
