Jackie Huang is a skilled paper craftsman from Los Angeles. We reached the creator to pose a few questions about her work: “The medium I utilize is something the vast majority experience as an ordinary item – paper. I attempt to transform that normal item into something exceptional. Something that requests that the viewer stop, to examine, and to think outside the box.
I first got into paper art through pop-ups. At school, I had been struggling with my drawing and painting skills for a while. I wanted rules and yes/no answers for things, but art doesn’t usually work that way. But when I found paper as a medium, everything clicked. I’ve always had a very good sense for 3D spatial reasoning so I found working with paper to be very natural.
Now, I use a variety of techniques to create my work – layering, quilling, paper engineering, etc. I don’t limit myself to a particular technique so I can explore and experiment.
I seek inspiration from lots of places – animation, fashion, stationery, packaging, and children’s books. The biggest inspiration though has been events from my own life. It may sound cheesy, but I think that’s when I create my best work. It’s when I can tell the story that no one else can tell”.
