The Supreme Court has declined to force a nationwide prohibition on sale of firecrackers. In its decision today, the court said just ‘green firecrackers’ (which are less polluting) will be permitted to be sold.
Firecracker manufacturers had earlier told the court that use of crackers should not be completely banned as it will cost thousands their livelihood. They have also contested that crackers are not the sole reason for increase in air pollution and factors like wind and temperature also contribute to it.
In its order, the court restricted the online sale of firecrackers and put a stay on e-commerce gateways from selling them.
The court said just “low polluting” green crackers which are inside allowed decibel limits and mission norms will be permitted.
The court likewise forced timing restrictions on burning firecrackers on Diwali. The court said individuals will be permitted to burn crackers in between 8 pm and 10 pm on Diwali. On New Year and Christmas, the planning is from 11:45 pm to 12:15 am.
The court has additionally guided all states to explore feasibility of community cracker bursting during festivals.
The Supreme Court’s decision came in light to a plea looking for a restriction on manufacturing and sale of firecrackers across the nation to control air contamination.
This comes 15 days ahead of Diwali (November 7). The Supreme court also directs Central Pollution Control Board to monitor air quality 7 days before and 7 days after Diwali.
Let’s see what people have to say about it-
If #SupremeCourt bans #Firecrackers, it must be an All India Blanket Ban on manufacturing, sale, purchase & use of Crackers, at all times. No crackers should be allowed on Christmas,New Year,Ceremonies, etc.
A ban imposed only during Hindu festival #Diwali would be sheer Hypocrisy.

Overall balanced judgement by the SC on #Firecrackers We have to draw the line somewhere to curb pollution. But the crucial question is how will it be implemented? How the SHO will make it sure that no firecrackers are burst before 8 pm and post 10 pm on Diwali?

In a country where there is no adequate law enforcement machinery to prevent rapes and lynching and human trafficking now the cops will be patrolling to see if you burst crackers at scheduled time😂 SC sounds like a parody #firecrackers
