Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched a strong attack on the DMK during the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Monday, September 7, 2026. He referred to the Sarkaria Commission controversy, the Veeranam project controversy and recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) material while accusing previous DMK leaders of corruption. The allegations triggered a major political clash inside the Assembly. What Happened in the Tamil Nadu Assembly?CM Vijay began his reply on the Home Department's demand for grants at around 9:33 am. He initially spoke about his government's steps on law and order and corruption-free governance. Around 20 minutes later, he shifted his speech towards the previous DMK government and its leaders.Vijay cited the 1976 Sarkaria Commission report and said it contained a chapter concerning the Veeranam pipeline project. He alleged that the report referred to demands for a 2.5% commission connected with the project. He also referred to a December 2025 ED letter and DVAC material while making allegations against several DMK leaders. The Chief Minister's remarks led to loud protests from DMK legislators. Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin asked for permission to respond to the allegations, but Speaker J.C. Prabhakar did not allow him to intervene at that point. DMK MLAs entered the Well of the House, displayed pamphlets and later walked out in protest. What Is the Sarkaria Commission? The Sarkaria Commission was established by the Government of India in 1983 under the chairmanship of Justice R.S. Sarkaria to examine Centre-State relations and recommend ways to improve the working relationship between the Union and state governments. However, the issue mentioned by Vijay relates to the commission's examination of allegations concerning the then Tamil Nadu government. During Monday's Assembly debate, Vijay used the report as part of his criticism of the DMK's historical record. His statements were political allegations made during the Assembly debate and should not be treated as fresh findings by the commission.
