Neeru Dhanda, a 26-year-old trap shooter and Naib Subedar in the Indian Army, etched her name into the history books by claiming the individual gold medal in the women's trap event at the Asian Games 2026. Overcoming severe illness prior to the event and challenging weather conditions on the range, she delivered a stellar performance to break the previous Asian record with a score of 28 hits in the final. This monumental victory makes her the first Indian woman to ever win an individual trap gold at the continental games. Why Did She Dedicate Her Win to Cousin Lakshya and the Armed Forces? The journey of the champion shooter traces back to her maternal cousin, Lakshya Sheoran, whose silver medal win at the 2018 Asian Games first sparked her interest in the sport. Starting with a family gun and moving through rigorous training phases, Neeru has consistently acknowledged her family's foundational support. Serving as a Naib Subedar in the Corps of Military Police, she proudly dedicated her golden triumph to the Indian armed forces and legendary shooter Randhir Singh, expressing deep gratitude for those who protect and serve the nation. How Did the Path to Victory Unfold Against All Odds?Getting to the top podium was far from straightforward. Neeru faced immense physical setbacks, including severe illness and hospitalization just weeks before the tournament, leaving her with minimal preparation time. Despite these hurdles, she maintained extraordinary mental composure during the rain-soaked final series to edge past formidable international competitors like China's Yunong Sun. Beyond her individual glory, she also combined efforts with her teammates earlier in the competition to secure a commendable silver medal in the women's team trap event. What Message Does This Historic Win Send to Future Generations?Reflecting on her remarkable rise from practicing with tin cans in Jind, Haryana, to global stardom, Neeru emphasized that her primary goal was paving the way for upcoming athletes. By proving that sheer dedication can conquer any challenge, she hopes to inspire a new generation of Indian shooters to believe in their potential on the international stage.also read : Flydubai Pilot Fight Forces Emergency Saudi Landing
