FSSAI Flags Nestle Product at The Lalit The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken action after a sample of Nestle's Low Fat Dairy Whitener collected from The Lalit hotel in Connaught Place, New Delhi, was declared “unsafe” and “substandard” following laboratory analysis. According to FSSAI, the sample was collected from the premises of Bharat Hotels Ltd., which operates The Lalit. A Food Analyst's laboratory examined the product and found it non-compliant with provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Notice Issued to Bharat Hotels Following the laboratory findings, FSSAI issued a notice to Bharat Hotels Ltd. regarding the non-compliant Nestle product. The regulator also provided the hotel operator with a copy of the laboratory analysis report for reference and necessary action. FSSAI said Bharat Hotels has been given an opportunity to challenge the Food Analyst's report and file an appeal within the prescribed period under the food safety law. Sale of Identified Product Stopped Pending further proceedings, FSSAI directed the food business operator to immediately prohibit the sale of the identified product. The regulator's publicly available statement did not specify the particular parameter or contaminant that resulted in the product being classified as both unsafe and substandard. It also did not publicly disclose the batch number or quantity covered by the action. What Happens Next? The notice does not represent a final determination against the hotel operator, as Bharat Hotels has been given the prescribed opportunity to appeal the Food Analyst's findings. The action comes as food safety authorities continue testing products and enforcing compliance with food safety standards across hotels, retailers and other food businesses
