India celebrates the 19th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas today. As on this date, in 1999, the Kargil misadventure ended with India getting victorious. Till date, this day is remembered in the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the country.

India took command of the high outposts on July 26, 1999, which had been lost to Pakistani intruders and the war was fought for more than 60 days.

Lt. Gen. (Retd) Mohindar Puri, who commanded 8 Mountain Division during the war shared his experience regarding the cumbersome battle and said the nation should remember the supreme sacrifice of those jawans who sacrificed their life to win the war in just 60 days and for remembering them. He added that one should not wait till Kargil Vijay Diwas to remember their sacrifice. It should be remembered every single day as they have given their youth for a safe and better tomorrow for the country, as per Daily Excelsior report.

During the first week of May 1999, India received reports of infiltrators from across the border coming into Kargil occupying it. The security forces initially thought they were Mujahideen, but they soon realized that it was the Pakistani army that had occupied some of the posts. In reaction to the infiltration, India launched Operation Vijay to drive the Pakistani troops out of Kargil.
